Composting

Eliminating waste and helping our hens thrive

We get out what we put in

Our state-of-the-art composting facility lets us turn manure and lower-quality eggs into a rich, organic
compost that's used to produce crops that feed our hens, as well as being bought by others.

At McLean Farms, composting plays a critical role in the life cycle of an egg. Containing leaking eggs and the manure from our birds, our compost is a rich source of nourishment on our farm.

Our compost is pasteurised and pathogen-tested, ensuring it’s guaranteed to be free from salmonella, listeria, E. coli and coliforms. Sawdust is added to our raw manure as a carbon source, and this then goes through a pasteurisation process whereby it reaches 65 degrees for 35 days, whilst being regularly turned and aerated to enhance aerobic bacteria.

Our compost is pasteurised and pathogen-tested

This industry-leading way of working results in a nutrient-rich compost that can be sown immediately, with the resulting crops then be fed to our hens, thereby closing the loop of our processes. Our compost is sold to the horticultural industry, grain farmers and landscapers through our own Organic Nutrients compost brand.
